So...yes. I've started another blog.
Those who know me well should feel free to make fun of me in the comments.
For those that don't know me all that well...welcome to my new blog! I suppose an explanation wouldn't be entirely out of order.
I've been a blogger for some time...longer than most, I'd say. Over the years, I've started literally millions of blogs (of course, by "literally," I mean "not literally") only to allow them to die slow, painful deaths. I currently have another blog that I share with my wife. That blog can be located here. I haven't posted anything of substance on that blog in about year or so. Hopefully that'll change soon.
But, this blog is a different endeavor entirely.
I used to blog almost exclusively about politics. But, over time, I realized that posting inflammatory political rhetoric on the Internet could potentially be detrimental to my future job prospects. Unfortunately, it took me a long time to reach this conclusion and, while I can't say for sure whether my numerous bouts of online, right-wing twaddling have stunted my career trajectory, they certainly haven't helped.
So, over time, I began to blog more and more about movies, posting reviews, observations, etc. But, for reasons unbeknownst everyone, including myself, I stopped reviewing movies on my other blog. It's sad, really. Here are all these people in the world wondering what I thought about the latest releases, what movies I've been watching on Netflix, and what general musings I might have about the state of modern cinema. Yet, I've selfishly been keeping this information to myself. Well, that stops now...hopefully...at least until I get sick of it.
Some of you might feel tempted to ask why I don't simply resume posting movie reviews on my other blog. While it's really none of your business and I'd thank you to wait until we get to know each other before you start asking making such personal inquiries, that's not a bad question. I suppose the biggest reason is that the other blog has, over time, evolved and is now focused almost entirely on the growth, development, and overall insane cuteness of my eight-month-old son. And, I've kinda felt that an out-of-the-blue movie review in the midst of all those pictures, videos, and family updates would seem kinda weird.
Plus, it's been a few years since I've started a new blog...I've kinda missed it.
Yes, I'm aware that this is not the first movie-specific blog I've created. Let's just skip that line of questioning...unless you'd like me to bring up some of the lame things you did three or four years ago.
Your final question is probably a more fundamental one: Why blog at all? If you stopped blogging a year ago, why start again now? It's not blogging is cool any more.
My answer: Wow...that's kinda rude. What's with the third degree all of the sudden? I've just missed the intellectual exercise, okay? No need to be so demeaning and confrontational. Yeesh.
Anyway, this the longest, most inane inaugural post in the long history of my inaugural blog posts. Don't worry, they'll get better. I'm just a little rusty. I don't know if I've mentioned it, but it's been like a year since I've blogged about anything.
Welcome back. I look forward to your insight, and misguided praise heaped towards the shoe-gazing works of Sofia Coppola and Wes Anderson.
ReplyDeleteI'm just hoping you don't say anyone was 'a revelation'.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Dan...you've been harping on Sam referring to Heath Ledger's performance in Brokeback Mountain as "a revelation" for literally six years now. I've been quiet about it...mostly because I didn't love the movie as much as Sam did. But, it's time to set the record straight.
ReplyDeleteDictionary definition of "revelation":
1. The act of revealing or disclosing.
2. Something revealed, especially a dramatic disclosure of something not previously known or realized.
So, if an actor turns in a performance that surprisingly demonstrates previously unseen talent or range, as Ledger did in Brokeback Mountain, it is not some kind of arty haughtiness to call that performance "a revelation." It is, quite simply, the correct usage of the word.
I didn't aim that at Sam, and frankly had no memory at all of him using that term or what movie it was used for. I think the term is overused in general when it comes to movies or actors. So, don't know why you think I have a vendetta against Sam.
ReplyDeleteYou've made several cracks about Sam's usage of the word over the years...and it stemmed from that one time he used it to describe Heath Ledger. Vendetta or not, that's where your recurrent beef with the term "revelation" seems to have stemmed from.
ReplyDeleteUntrue, it existed before, after, and independent of Sam. I make cracks about the usage, not specifically Sam's usage.
